It occurred to me, given the credible, prevailing evidence that college professors do not indoctrinate students, and actually have little impact on socio-political views of students, then neither these professors nor teachers in middle school and high school have done enough to help students learn to think independently, particularly with regard to 1) the pitfalls in reasoning due to bias and 2) overcoming the convenience of lazy thinking. Helping students become energetic, independent thinkers, capable of analytical, scientific, and critical thinking but with a focus on discussing rather than just debating ideas may then permit a societal transformation from the comparative unpleasantness of the controlling indoctrination of the “pledge of allegiance” to a broader, inclusive societal focus on “collaboration-and-liberty” and “empathy-and-justice” for all.
